Using Augmented Reality with the Book

Creating Media for Learning is one of the first books that utilizes augmented reality to allow readers to interact with the printed page.

The book includes sample projects that demonstrate the use of specific media. Each project is represented with an image printed in your book. If a picture is worth a thousand words, shouldn’t a short video be worth at least a thousand pictures? I definitely believe it can, and I’ve used an innovative technique to allow you to view those videos. Through the aid of augmented reality, you’re able to point your mobile device at specific images in the book and see the associated video playing—right there on the printed page. Seriously!

Here’s how you do it:
  1. Download either the DAQRI or Blippar ​app on your mobile device.
  2. As you read through the book, you’ll see some images with a small icon in the upper-left corner. Those images have been enabled for augmented reality viewing.
  3. Open the Blippar or DAQRI app on your mobile device and point it at the whole image. Note that if it’s the first time you’ve used the app, then you may need to go through a short introductory tutorial.
  4. Watch the image on the printed page and after a couple of seconds, the photo will suddenly morph into a video.
